Before They Arrive

Most Chernobyl children arrive with little personal luggage, and will need you to provide the basic necessities from day one.

For example:

  • A new toothbrush, toothpaste, a bar of soap, and a towel for personal use will avoid embarrassment and mis-understanding.

  • When you know the age of your child or children, it may be useful to start collecting good-as-new items.

  • Inexpensive underwear, socks and nightwear for the first night and day are useful items to have ready before the arrival.

  • The children can be shy and may take a little longer to adjust to making choices, but with help they soon overcome their initial reserve.

  • A supply of sanitary towels.

Suggestions:

  • Children may be anxious when they arrive in the UK and, in exceptional circumstances, some bed-wetting may occur. As a precaution, we suggest that you consider covering mattresses with a plastic sheet to avoid any embarrassment.

  • You will find addresses for the children you are hosting in Appendix D along with their profile. As part of helping the children feel at ease we hand each one an envelope on the bus with your profile and photo – PLEASE COMPLIE YOUR FAMILY PROFILE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELVES AND FAMILY MEMBERS (INCLUDING NAMES AND PETS, IF ANY) EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO, YOUR INTERESTS AND A SHORT WELCOME/GREETING. PLEASE INCLUDE1-2 PHOTOS OF FAMILY/HOME. Please give your profile to Sue Molden as soon as possible after the Pre-host Meeting, one of our helpers will then reproduce all the profiles and in format along with a written Russian greeting.
