Mid Suffolk Link

Welcome to the MID SUFFOLK Link. We are based in Needham Market but our Hosts and Supporters come from anywhere between Felixstowe and Bury St Edmunds and also as far as Diss. We are always happy to hear from anyone who would be interested in Hosting but even if you can't host there are may other ways in which you can support our group.

We are part of a national charity founded in 1992. Since then many "Links" have been established throughout the UK, raising money to support the children of Belarus and Ukraine whose lives will be forever affected by the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. We are now going into our 10th year of operation and the picture below shows a group of children who have enjoyed a four week visit with us during the past few years. The children arrived pale and tired, this picture taken just before the children went home shows just how much they improved during the four weeks they were here. Not only did they return home happy but also every child had been to the Dentist, receiving free treatment where necessary. The children arrive with just the clothes they stand in and very little else. Throughout the year we collect good quality secondhand clothing, for both summer and winter use, and each child can take home 25kg plus 8kg hand luggage. In 2015 for the very first time we brought two groups and were fortunate enough to be able to do this again in December 2016 and as the visit also incorporated Christmas made this a very special time for them. This visit was very successful and subject to funds being available one we would hope to repeat. Obviously having two visits in one year does mean we have to raise more money but with your support we are confident we will achieve what we need.

We have several lists of items, many very inexpensive but invaluable, if you would like to donate something please contact us and we will be happy to forward the lists to you. you can find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Ccllmidsuffolk We also have our own JustGiving Page at: https://www.justgiving.com/chernobylmidsuffolk

Not many people are aware that 2016 marked the 30th year since Chernobyl disaster and yet still these children are suffering from the after affects as will many future generations to come. The children we bring come from the Town of Belazoorsk In the Berooza disctrict of the Brest Region. Although the children are not sick when they travel they have all inherited the legacy of Chernobyl and they and thousands of others must live with the effects of this disaster, day in and day out for the rest of their lives.

Children who come in our groups have never been abroad before. We are not involved in the selection process, we can only request the number of boys and girls we wish to invite, the children are then selected by the Education Authorities. The children do not come with expectations and we do our very best not to spoil them although everyone who has been involved with the group will know how hard that is. Shortly after arrival we hold a Welcome/Clothing Party where the children can choose from everything we have collected, often they choose not just for themselves but for brothers and sisters at home.!

During the month of the visit we have many activities and events arranged for the children, the majority of which are sponsored by local organisations. Most importantly, the children are seen, free of charge, by our local Dentist, Jillian Geaney of Wedgewood Dental Practise in Stowmarket. Unfortuntely the level of care in Belarus is nowhere near that of the UK, the group of 2014 had a total of 51 extractions and 42 fillings and all of this work was done in one day!

We do however send the children home with as much "support" as possible and this is where everyone who is interested can help. We collect all manner of items that are invaluable for them to take home. Each child will receive a shoebox of very basic medical items ranging from simple plasters to cold sore cream and chapsticks to help in the bitter winters when temperatures can fall below minus 30 degrees. New School Shoes and Trainers are provided together with school uniform which has become so expensive for parents to buy. You do NOT need to Host to help. Your time, just an hour or two if that’s all you can spare, can make a tremendous difference to us and to the children. We are working hard to raise the money we require to fund this years visit. Please click on the Fundraising Link on the left of this page to see details of our forthcoming events.

We now have a Charity Shop to be found in Needham Market adjacent to the Rampant Horse Public House in Coddenham Road. This is a real "Aladins Cave" with everything priced to sell. Why not drop in and grab yourself a bargain. We are always looking for volunteers to help in the shop. Each session is three hours long and there are always two people on duty. We are a happy crew and the Tea,Coffee and Chat flows freely.Donations are always welcome on Tuesdays,Thursdays and Friday and at all other times by prior arrangement. We can also arrange collections if neccesary. We reseptfully ask that people do not leave donations at the shop when it is closed as it casues great inconvenience to the residents and goods left outside get spoilt and cannot be used. The shop is open Tuesday to Fridays 10:00am until 4:00pm and Saturdays 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

We would like to extend our very grateful thanks to our Sponsors without whom this Link would not exist.

We appreciate there are difficult times ahead for many people in the UK but we need to help these kidz and YOU can help us.....cos you know....."Every little helps!"

Please feel free to contact me either via the "contact" Link of the Website or by calling me on 01449 760343.

I look forward to talking with you.

The following poem was written by a member of CCLL which very aptly describes the situation these children live in:

I cannot see you but I am looking at you
I cannot feel you but I am touching you
I cannot smell you but I am breathing you
I know who you are because my Mama told me so
Your name is Radiation......and you are everywhere I go

Imagine: Living the rest of your life in a radioactive polluted environment. There is no escape.

Money can cure poverty but all the money in the word cannot cure the problems of Radiation
